Help Me Through Another Day

I've been runnin' round this town, for many years I kicked around
Down on 2nd Avenue, hopin' all my dreams come true
But this is just a hard luck tale you've heard before, the old soft sell
Nickels, dimes and quarters too, I'll sing my songs to help me through

To help me through another day
And if I make a friend along the way
Then I can smile and hold my head up high
Count my change and watch 'em all walk by

Now I've been told about those times when life was good and O' so fine
Back before my grandpa died the world was young and so was I
He told me stories and taught me songs, I'd sit right there and sing along
To Jimmy, Hank and Lefty too, I'll sing these songs to help me through

To help me through another day
And if I make a friend along the way
Then I can smile and hold my head up high
And listen to that lonesome whistle whine

Oh just like a train rollin' down the line
Oh I leave the past so far behind, so far behind

Well I've been livin' in this world and all the things I've seen unfurled
Since '56 right up till now makes me weep, I don't know how
Or if and when we'll see the day when people seem to be O.K.
With love and peace and being true, I'll sing this song to help me through

Help me through another day
And if I make a friend along the way
Then I can smile and hold my head up high
And no more tears of sorrow will I cry

Yeah I can smile and hold my head up high
As the sweet south summer wind goes driftin' by
